22. Footage

One of the new developments in Microstock sites is the addition of footage to their product range.

I myself don't know anything about shooting video's, but I do know that the ones who sign up early get the biggest piece of the pie (Just see how many of the best selling contributors in Microstock sites submit from the beginning). I guess the same will happen with this footage-thing.

Because I don't know much about it myself I copy some of the FAQ about footage from the site of shutterstock. The whole FAQ you can read at : http://footage.shutterstock.com/faq.html

18.1. What is stock footage ?

Stock Footage is a short video, generally less than 60 seconds. The subject can really be anything : daily street life, fireworks, drinks being poured, events. As long as they can be used for commercial or editorial purposes.

18.2. Where can stock footage be used ?

Stock footage can be used in advertisements, news broadcast, educational video's, websites, presentations, ...

18.3. How much do you get from a footage sale ?

  Salesprice ($) pay out ($)
Shutterstock 39 - 99 13 - 33
iStockphoto 5 - 50 1 - 10

Note : Royalties for iStock are based on the base payout ratio (20%). The exclusive rules also apply to footage. Thus you can make up to 40% royalties. Read more about exclusivity on page 20.

18.4. Are people really buying these clips ?

This was a question I asked myself too.

I did a search on iStockphoto and found this homevideo of a dancing santa which was downloaded 89 times in 2 months.

Apparently you can make footage from 3D renders too. This clip I liked very much. It has been downloaded 61 times in less than 4 months.

18.5. Conclusion

Imho this is a great chance for a videographer who is willing to give it a shot. Just like with the photographs, it were the first who submitted, who did get the largest piece. To bad I don't know anything about making video's, otherwise I surely would give it a try.
