4. Extended Licenses

What are they, when do you need them ?

Extended licenses, sometimes also called Enhanced licenses, are meant to cover some of the restrictions a standard royalty free license has. Again they can differ from site to site.

Underneath I list some of the main reasons when an extended licenses would be needed.

1. Increased Print run :

Most of the times the standard license allows a certain number of copies you can make of an image. This 'printrun' is fairly large and varies from 250.000 to 500.000 copies depending the site. If you want to print more than this number, you need an extended license which will cost between $40 and $100 (again depending the site)

note : some sites like Fotolia allows an unlimited printrun in their standard license.

2. Multi Seat License :

Normally an image can only be used by the designer who downloaded it. It can't be passed on to it's colleagues. If a company would like that more than one designer can use an image they need to purchase an extended license. Prices for multi seat licenses varies from $25 to $50 depending the site and depending the number of designers who can use the images.

3. Items for resale :

The most common extended license is that which allows the buyer to use the image in a product which he wants to sell. This can be posters, framed artwork, cards, screensavers, mugs, stickers, ...
The price of such a license depends on the usage and of cours on the site. It varies from $15 to $120.

note : Although the image may be sold ON an item, the images on its own may not be sold.

4. Buy out :

Finally two sites (Dreamstime and Fotolia) offer the possibility to sell the rights of your images completely. Than the buyer can do with the image he wants. There are two cases I can think of someone would like to buy the rights.
1) If they want the image exclusive for a big campaign for instance and 2) if they want to include the image in a logo or trademark.

Such a license is very rare I think. And the amount can be negotiated with the buyer.

I already sold 6 images, in 2 occasions, under this license. Each time I received more than $500. Not bad.

Because of these higher prices, extended licenses can make an big difference in your earnings. You'll need between 10 and 80 normal sales to make up for 1 extended sale.
