Glamour Retouching

03. Correcting Minor Exposure Problems

After I removed the large blemishes I begin to remove the minor imperfection on the skin. These can be little highlights caused by sweat or dark spots caused by a cavity in the skin.

I do this with the patch tool too, but I use the opacity slider to soften the effect. In that way I retain part of the original details.

03.1. The nose

A typical problem I solve with this method are the highlights often seen on the tip of the nose. Underneath you see an example of this.

1. duplicate the layer

2. use the patch tool to correct the highlights.

3. The effect on 100% opacity is to strong. It will flatten out the entire face which won't look good at all.

4. Bring back some highlights by bringing down the opacity. And merge the layers if you want.

The effect on this image is very subtile, but the method can be used to correct much severe cases. Or try to use it if you have other light spots which aren't supposed to be there.

03.2. Shadows / deep wrinkles

The methode with the Patch Tool can be used to correct small shadows or other little dark spots too.

But in area's with a lot of detail, the Clone Stamp Tool seems to work better. The Patch Tool seems to soften the details too much. Underneath I give an example of removing a wrinkle partially.

1. This is the original wrinkle along the mouth. Duplicate the layer.

2. Use the Clone Stamp Tool to clone the skin next to the wrinkle. This doesn't seems to work because the cloning is obvious.

3. But by lowering the opacity of the layer we bring back some detail. Besides that the wrinkle isn't complete gone which is actually what you want because otherwise your model will look like a doll after you've finished. The goal is to smoothen such details, not to get rid of them completely.
