05. Correcting Large Shadows
The following method I don't use a lot myself because it's destructive (destroys detail). But in some cases it might help you just that bit.
We all know those dark shadow area's which we would like to light up a little. But because of the lack of detail (deep shadow) we can't use curves because we would create a lot of noise that way. In such case I do the following.
1. Pick with the eyedropper a light skin color
2. Add a new layer and paint with a large soft bush on the shadow area's
3. Change the blending mode to 'lighten'
4. Decrease opacity significantly until the effect is just visible
5. Add a layer mask and mask those area's where you don't like the effect
